Filter Pumps

Filter pumps are a special type of radial pump and belong to the group of centrifugal pumps due to their basic operating principle. The special feature is that these pumps have an integrated, upstream filter (dirt trap) before the pumped medium reaches the actual pump hydraulics, the impeller.

Working principle of Filter Pumps

A filter pump is a special type of radial pump. While the hydraulic pump component is identical to that of a radial pump, a filter is integrated into the unit upstream of the pump on the suction side to optimise the installation space. The pump design can be vertical, with a filter fitted under the pump, or horizontal, with a filter fitted upstream on the suction side.

The integrated filter prevents dirt particles such as hair, fibres or leaves from entering the pump hydraulics. The filter strainer must be cleaned at regular intervals, depending on the degree of medium contamination. This involves interrupting the pump operation, removing the filter according to the manual, removing the collected material, and reinserting the filter before putting the pump back into operation. The filter strainer generally has a mesh size of 3 mm, but can vary depending on requirements.

Range of applications for Filter Pumps

Filter pumps are used in applications which involve pumping contaminated water. The filter traps coarser materials such as fibres or leaves, which are then removed manually or using automated systems.

Typical areas of application include:

  • Swimming pools
  • Water attractions
  • Fountains
Features & Advantages of Filter Pumps

Features of a Filter Pump

  • compact design with integrated filter
  • direct drive
  • dry installation
  • Sealing systems with optional dry running protection

Advantages of Filter Pumps

✔️ Type of construction more compact than solution with upstream filter on suction side
✔️ Established solution for more than 40 years
✔️ Tailor-made solution to meet the requirements of swimming pool operators

Which manufacturers offer Filter Pumps?

The more complex design of filter pumps requires an adapted pump casing to reduce the overall height for vertical installation. As a result, there are fewer manufacturers which offer pumps tailored to meet the requirements of the pool industry.

Herborner Pumpentechnik, a Star Pump Alliance member and market leader in this pump technology in Central Europe, is one such manufacturer. The company specialises in manufacturing particularly efficient, durable and sustainable filter pumps. The pumps are available in various electric drive versions and materials and are sold worldwide. They can also be found in large water parks around the world.
