Hygienic Displacement Pumps

In the food, beverage, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries, particularly strict purity and hygiene requirements apply to every part of the plant that comes into contact with the product. Pumps are in direct contact with the medium being handled and therefore have to meet the highest standards. For viscous or sensitive products, and for applications requiring accurate metering, hygienic positive displacement pumps are a common choice. A hygienic positive displacement pump is a version designed specifically for hygiene-sensitive industries, moving liquids by enclosing a defined volume and forcing it mechanically through the pump.

Unlike centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps generate almost no shear forces, which allows sensitive, highly viscous or solids-laden media to be handled gently. To meet the hygiene requirements of food and pharmaceutical production, these pumps also feature specific design characteristics. These include smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces, a crevice-free design and the consistent avoidance of dead spaces in which residues could settle and lead to microbial growth.

How Hygienic positive Displacement Pumps work

The operating principle of a positive displacement pump differs fundamentally from that of a centrifugal pump. Instead of accelerating the medium by means of a rotating impeller, the positive displacement pump works on the principle of volumetric displacement. During the suction stroke, a fixed quantity of liquid is enclosed in a cavity within the pump. This cavity then travels towards the outlet, where the enclosed medium is discharged. Depending on the design, rotary lobes, gears, screw spindles or diaphragms act as the displacement element.

Thanks to this operating principle, the flow rate remains virtually constant regardless of pressure fluctuations in the system, which allows precise and repeatable metering even with thick or solids-laden media. Because pumping does not rely on the high rotational speeds of a centrifugal pump, shear forces are minimal, so sensitive products and liquids can be handled gently without any change to their structure or consistency.

Design variants of Hygienic positive Displacement Pumps

Several designs have become established among hygienic positive displacement pumps, differing in construction and in the applications they suit. The choice of the right variant depends primarily on viscosity, flow rate and the properties of the medium.

  • Rotary Lobe Pumps: Two counter-rotating lobes convey the medium through the pump casing without contact. Suitable for viscous and solids-laden products that need to be handled at pressure while still being treated gently.
  • Gear Pumps: Intermeshing gears produce a steady and precise volumetric flow. Suitable for applications with especially high requirements for metering accuracy and long service life.
  • Progressive Cavity Pumps: An eccentrically rotating rotor runs inside a stator and delivers virtually pulsation-free flow. Suitable for sensitive, highly viscous media.
  • Multi Screw Pumps: Intermeshing screw spindles provide reliable and even delivery, including at high flow rates. Suitable for strongly lubricating or highly viscous liquids in large volumes.
  • Peristaltic Pumps: The medium travels solely inside a flexible hose that is compressed from the outside, with no contact with mechanical components. Suitable for shear-sensitive or sterile applications.
  • Diaphragm Pumps: An oscillating diaphragm displaces the medium and completely separates the drive section from the product, so no rotating parts come into contact with the medium. Diaphragm pumps are particularly suitable for aggressive or ultra-pure media.
  • Plunger Pumps: A plunger with a stationary seal produces a precise, oscillating pumping motion. Plunger pumps are therefore used above all for high-precision metering tasks involving very small volumes, for example in specialised pharmaceutical dosing applications.

Which design is best suited to which application ultimately depends on the specific process conditions. It is therefore always worth comparing the technical requirements with the characteristics of each pump technology before selecting one.

Advantages of Hygienic positive Displacement Pumps

Compared with other pump technologies, hygienic positive displacement pumps offer several advantages that make them particularly attractive for the food, beverage, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.

  • Constant, volumetrically accurate delivery: Enables exact metering regardless of pressure fluctuations in the system and makes these pumps the first choice for filling and blending processes.
  • Reliable handling of viscous media: Handles highly viscous and solids-laden products that push centrifugal pumps to their limits and does so without any loss of performance.
  • Gentle product handling: The low mechanical load preserves the structure and quality of sensitive products during delivery.
  • Reduced cleaning effort: CIP- and SIP-capable designs, together with hygienic connections such as Tri-Clamp fittings, allow quick and thorough cleaning without extensive disassembly.
  • Certified compliance: Recognised standards such as EHEDG, 3-A Sanitary Standards and FDA conformity build confidence among operators and auditors alike.
Applications for Hygienic positive Displacement Pumps

Hygienic positive displacement pumps are used in all those industries where product purity, process reliability and gentle handling are equally critical.

  • Food industry: For sauces, pastes, chocolate, dough and batters, as well as edible oils and fats, for example in the virtually maintenance-free handling of mayonnaise.
  • Dairies: For yoghurt, condensed milk and other sensitive dairy products, where low shear stress protects consistency and quality.
  • Beverage industry: For filling and precise metering, and in sparkling wine production, where pressure fluctuations and shear forces have to be avoided in order to prevent unwanted foaming.
  • Cosmetics industry: For creams, emulsions and shampoos, with a particular focus on easy cleaning and fast product changeovers between formulations.
  • Pharmaceutical production: For active ingredients and cell suspensions, for example in insulin production, where a dead-space-free design and residue-free cleaning in place are essential.

Beyond these core industries, hygienic positive displacement pumps are also found in other production environments where high demands on product protection and hygiene meet the need for precise, gentle handling.
