Soft starter

Definition: A soft starter designates an electronic solution that enables the soft start of electrical devices by means of power limitation measures. This control of the power supply unit or motor allows pumps to start gently, for example.

What is the purpose of soft starting for pumps?

In electric motors that supply pumps, the soft starter initially serves to protect transmission elements such as the clutch. However, the application also has a positive effect on production by avoiding the water hammer effect and relieving the entire system.

Soft starters are available as electronic components, which can be installed with little wiring effort and often without tools and in plugged assembly. An alternative method of achieving soft starts is to use frequency inverters. They can be used to gradually increase the speed to the full value with a ramp function.
