FELUWA Heavy Weights (Video)

Explanatory video goes into detail about FELUWA pumps of the type SGL

Uwe Arce from FELUWA explaning the SGL pumps

Concerning pump size and weight, FELUWA often attracts attention due to heavy weights, but even smaller pumps of the type of SGL don’t rank behind them. They are true allrounders when it comes to performance and benefits, all packed up in a small stainless-steel casing. Regional Sales Manager Uwe Arce has summarised the advantages of the two pump types in a YouTube video.

2 options: SGL – M 190 und SGL – DS 1

Both are oscillating displacement pumps suitable for conveying abrasive, aggressive and toxic fluids as well as heterogeneous mixtures with high solids content. Considering that the pumps are built of stainless steel, they can be used in the harshest environments and are suitable for numerous processes, such as chemical dosing and injection, spray drying and dosing applications. This qualifies the compact pumps of the type SGL as field-proven all-rounders which have already been utilized for over 40 years in a wide range of applications worldwide. The SGL – M 190 can also keep up when it comes to sustainability, as some of the pumps return to our test rig after 40 years of operation for upgrading or retrofitting.

Pump types: SGL - M 190 (left) and the SGL - DS 1 (right)

Common features of the two pump types

Both the SGL - M 190 and the SGL - DS 1 are electrically driven piston diaphragm pumps and the abbreviation SGL refers to a worm gear. The rotary driving motion of the pump gearbox is converted into a reciprocating action of the crosshead by means of the crank drive. The crosshead is connected to the piston or plunger, respectively.

Different diaphragms

The difference between the two pump types is the actuation by different types of diaphragms. In the case of the SGL - M 190 a flat diaphragm is utilized and the SGL - DS 1 is equipped with two hose-diaphragms, one inside the other. The conveyed fluid is not only enclosed in a linear way, but at the same time the double, hermetic separation from the hydraulic area is ensured. Hence, it doesn’t come into contact neither with the pump head, nor with the hydraulic chamber. This working principle is also known as the FELUWA MULTISAFE® technology.

Hose Diaphragm Guard (HDG): diagnostic system for SGL - DS 1

Another difference is the condition monitoring of the hose diaphragm. Thanks to the Hose Diaphragm Guard (HDG) which is integrated as standard, the operator is permanently informed about their condition. The HDG consists of either a simple pressure switch, a pressure gauge or contact pressure gauge. So, the condition of the hose diaphragms is permanently monitored by means of pressure measurement of the intermediate space between the diaphragms, which is normally depressurised during operation. In the unlikely event of a leak or failure of one of the two hose-diaphragms, the system detects the pressure increase in the intermediate space and immediately gives a signal to the operator.  The great advantage of MULTISAFE® double hose-diaphragm pumps is operation can be maintained. The second hose-diaphragm still enables a safe and reliable pumping process, as the medium cannot enter the hydraulic chamber. An immediate emergency shutdown isn’t necessary - the process can continue in a controlled manner until the customer's schedule allows for maintenance of the pump. Hence, the MULTISAFE® technology promises a high level of safety and availability.

Delivery characteristics are identical

In terms of basic performance, each of the pumps can deliver a flow rate in the range of 100 to 600 litres per hour at a pressure of up to 30 bar. The temperature of the conveyed fluid can range from -10 to +120 °C, and the flow rate accuracy is only +/-3%.

The advantages of SGL pumps

•    Cost-effective and available from stock
•    Long service life, convenient handling, and maintenance
•    Leakage free
•    Internal overpressure protection included
•    Minimal number of wetted parts simplifies adaptation to a wide range of process parameters and reduces wear
•    Precise selection of materials for wetted parts for the individual application (diaphragm, valves, pipes...)
•    High availability due to reduced number of wear parts and quick replacement of these parts
•    Available according to ATEX directives

Each principle has its advantages, but which pump type is the right choice for your application? In short: For the difficult cases, the pump of the type SGL - M 190 is used, more difficult cases require the further development with the FELUWA MULTISAFE® technology SGL - DS 1.
