At the SMM in Hamburg (September 3 – 6, 2024), the world’s leading trade fair for the maritime industry, our member SERO PumpSystems (Hall A2, Stand 118) will for the first time ever present the brand new SLP high-performance pump for providing methanol to dual-fuel engines on seagoing vessels. It is available in three versions with flow rates from 1 m³/h to 30 m³/h. The modular design concept of the side channel pump provides a safe high-pressure casing and was developed in accordance with the IMO-IGF regulations. Type approval from the relevant classification societies will be granted by the end of this year.
Low viscosities, which are a particular challenge for many positive displacement pumps, especially at higher temperatures and high differential pressures, are easily handled with the side channel pump.
The SLP pump comes along with some key advantages such as its low, speed-independent Net Positive Suction Head (NPSHR) of 0.3 m, its immunity to vibrations from the ship’s hull and the specially developed high-performance hydraulics.
It ensures reliable, constant pressure and pulsation-free pumping of methanol at a nominal pressure of up to 40 bar. It achieves a maximum speed of 3,500 rpm and is also suitable for variable speed operation. This means that a constant delivery pressure can be achieved over a large volume flow range when using a frequency converter.
The SLP is available in various material classes, with the media-contacting components meeting the standards of API 610. In operation, single or double-acting mechanical seals in cartridge design, compliant with API 682, ensure complete tightness and leak-free performance. This robust, multi-stage side channel pump SLP meets all process requirements for transporting liquid gas from storage tanks through the SFSS (Secondary Fuel Supply System) to the drive motor of a sea vessel, providing the highest levels of operational reliability and availability.
SLP: SERO’s response to the needs of the maritime energy transition for the combustion of green methanol and other alternative fuels
Following the introduction of the SHPmarine side channel pump in 2021, designed for transporting LPG in Secondary Fuel Supply Systems (SFSS) of hybrid ship propulsion systems, SERO PumpSystems now presents its latest marine technology innovation: the SLP. This new pump is engineered for methanol, which must be delivered to the engine at pressures exceeding 25 bar. Diesel-electric propulsion or onboard electricity generation for sea vessels typically relies on large 4-stroke diesel engines. By using methanol as fuel, these engines can significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
