Cantilever Pump with Vortex Impeller for Molasses Refinery Sump Service

A duty that rules out conventional designs

Molasses refining produces a continuous flow of process waste – washings, residual syrups, crystallization by-products – that drains into collection sumps. Two conditions define the pump duty: the fluid carries a significant solids load, and the sump runs nearly dry whenever upstream production slows or stops between batches. Most pump configurations cannot handle both simultaneously without added protection systems or accelerated wear.

 

Why cantilever construction fits this service?

A cantilever pump has no submerged bearings and no mechanical seal in contact with the liquid. The rotating element hangs from a column shaft, with the impeller and casing at the bottom and the entire drive assembly above the maximum flood level.

When the sump drops to a few centimetres – a routine condition in batch-driven refinery operations – the pump continues running without risk to seals or bearings. No dry-run protection, no minimum-level interlock, no seal flush system required.

Vortex impeller for clogging free operation

The vortex impeller does not act directly on the fluid in the conventional sense. It generates a recirculating flow inside the casing that carries the liquid and entrained solids through reducing the contact between impeller and solids. Fibrous residues, crystalline fines, and dense slurry pass through without clogging. There are no tight running clearances to adjust, and wear on wetted components remains predictable and gradual even under variable sump conditions.

 

Material selection: AISI 316 stainless steel

Wetted parts are in AISI 316 stainless steel, suited to the mildly acidic, sugar-rich environment of molasses waste streams. The material handles the combination of organic acids, occasional cleaning chemicals, and intermittent process heat without requiring lined construction or higher-alloy alternatives. Component replacement follows a standard maintenance schedule with off-the-shelf parts.

The unit shown has been in continuous operation at the same molasses refinery for ten years. No design modifications, no material upgrades. Routine maintenance only. In a sump duty with variable level and persistent solids content, that service record is the most relevant specification.
